Tested: 5YINA Seasons Part 1- Enlighten (Spring) Oil & Lucent (Summer) Oil

I haven't shared anything too personal on this blog before, however, I find it hard to not be personal about the brand that I'm reviewing today.  Many of you may know that I'm currently pursuing a Masters in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture.  I am interested in herbal medicine but more specifically it's applications to skincare.  It comes as no surprise then that I was completely ecstatic about discovering 5yina when I was browsing Instagram for great new skincare brands. 5yina's ethos resonates deeply with me as a brand that is not only focused on outer beauty but inner harmony as well.  Their name itself represents the importance they place on the 5 seasons in Chinese Medicine as well as their founder's names Yi(harmony) and Na(beauty).  This is a brand that is all about holistic health and skincare.  Right up my alley. I was given the amazing opportunity to try their oils from all four seasons as well as their beauty balm for the fifth season.  My skin has always been so picky with oils but they've changed my skin for the better on so many levels. I'll be taking you through the first 2 seasons today.

Now, before I get started, I'd like to emphasize how important it is to change your skincare in accordance with each season.  I'm sure you are all well acquainted with the idea of switching up your lighter emulsions during the summer to heavier oils to hydrate your skin in the winter.  5YINA takes this concept to the next level by formulating their oils to work perfectly with the needs of each season to achieve optimal results in skin health.

Let's begin.

Enlighten Oil (Spring)

Consistency:  I thought it'd be perfect to start out with an oil that is matched with this upcoming season.  Enlighten is a beautifully peachy-orange toned oil that is a light-medium oil that smells distinctly herbaceous.  This melts into my skin very well mixed in with my favorite night time serum.

Ingredients:
Camellia Oleifera (Camellia) Seed Oil*, Vitis Vinifera (Grapeseed) Oil*, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil*, Rosa Rubiginosa (Rosehip) Seed Oil*, 5YINA Proprietary Complex - { Camellia Oleifera (Camellia) Seed Oil*, Astragalus, A. Macrocephala (Atractylodes) Rhizome, Tremella Fruciformis, Grifola Frondosa (Maitake)*, Angelica Sinensis (Chinese Angelica) Root, Schizandra Chinensis (Schisandra) Berries, Paeonia Albiflora (Peony Root), Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice), Lithospermum Erythrorhizon (Gromwell) Root }, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamine E), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil and Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*, Helichrysum (Immortelle) Oil* , Pelargonium Graveolens (Rose Geranium) Oil*, Rose Damascena, Rose Bulgarian, Rose De Mai*.

Skincare benefits:
In Chinese Medicine, Spring is a time of an abundance of wind that can bring imbalance to your skin.  Huang Qi (Astragalus) is an antioxidant that improves moisture levels in the skin and works to stabilize the exterior.  Bali Shao (Peony root) is anti-inflammatory and preserves moisture while keeping pores nice and tight.  Bai Mu Er (Tremella) is famous in Asia for helping women keep their skin soft and pliable.  It is often eaten as well to provide the same skin benefits.  Camellia Sinensis (Camellia Seed Oil) was used by geisha to protect their own skin.  It promotes a healthy pH and has fatty acids, Vitamin E, and polyphenols.  Camellia is said to symbolize beginnings and changes so I find it a perfect addition to this Spring Oil.

Experience:
I loved mixing this oil with my beloved Moonlight Catalyst fro Kypris (a nighttime gel-like serum).  This had the perfect consistency for my skin type to use in the winter time as it was not too heavy or too light.  I loved the beautiful herbal scent of the oil and felt like my skin was glowing the morning after I had used this oil.  My cheeks were supple the next day and I felt as though I definitely had an inner glow after washing my face!  I love to use this during the night time since my skin is on the oily side so this consistency was perfectly heavy enough for my skin in the winter time.

Lucent Oil (Summer)

Consistency: This is a light, orange-toned oil with an herbal scent. I love how easily this blends into my skin without leaving any oily residue.  I have oily-combination skin so this oil was my favorite out of the 4 that I had tried.

Ingredients:
Camellia Oleifera (Camellia) Seed Oil*, Vitis Vinifera (Grapeseed) Oil*, 5YINA Proprietary Complex -{Camellia Oleifera (Camellia) Seed Oil*, Radix Ophiopogonis (Ophiopogon Tuber), Radix Panacis Quinquefolii (American Ginseng), Tremella Fruciformis, Schizandra Chinensis (Schisandra) Berries, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice), Angelica Chinensis (Chinese Angelica) Root, Nelumbo Nucifera (Lotus) Leaf }, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil*, Rosa Rubiginosa (Rosehip) Seed Oil*, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Oil*, Perilla Ocymoides (Perilla) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Europaea (Olive) Oil and Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*, Jasminum Officinale v. Grandiflorum (Dawn Blooming Jasmine) Oil, Nymphaea Caerulea & Santalum album (Blue Lotus & Sandalwood) Attar*, Citrus Aurantium Var. Amara (Petitgrain sur Fleurs) Oil*, Hyssopus Officinalis(Hyssop) Oil*, Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli)*, Vetiveria Zizanoides (Vetiver)*, Cinnamomum Camphora (Ho Wood), (Santalum Spicatum) Sandalwood Oil+.

+Wildcrafted

Skincare benefits:
Summer is a time of heat thus pores sweat more during the summertime.  Skin is also more prone to inflammation due to the weather during this season thus it is important to retain moisture and use products with anti-inflammatory properties to combat the changes in the season.  Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng) helps to increase radiance and even the complexion.  He Ye (Lotus Leaf) and the Lotus Flower helps prevent inflammation, and in that realm, breakouts.  Zi Su Zi (Perilla Seed) is anti-inflammatory which is perfect for the season as well as acne-prone skin.  Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) clears heat and promotes glowing hydration.

Experience:
This is my favorite oil hands down from 5YINA.  Perhaps it is the fact that it is their lightest oil and it absorbs so perfectly fast on my skin.  Perhaps it is because of my personal preference for lighter oils due to my skin type.  Either way,  I've noticed great improvements in my skin texture since I've started mixing this with my Moonlight Catalyst every night.  My skin has become softer and this has not ever aggravated my skin as so many oils have done.  I've also never broken out from this oil or from using the other oils from 5YINA.  This is the clear winner for me,  but I'll be reviewing the heavier oils for Autumn and Winter later this week so you can find one (or many) that best suit your skin!

  4. Wow, that great to know that you have been pursuing a Masters in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. I also want to be the acupuncturist. So I’ll also take admission in certification acupuncture program. You know my sister is an experienced acupuncturist at some domestic acupuncture Mississauga center.
