Call me late, but I've only recently started figuring out how to highlight and shade my face. This isn't to say that I'm particularly good at it, but I've found that highlighting really brings out the face in an emphasized 3-dimensional way and shading really helps to slim down the face(I don't quite use it for a defined contour).
