Collectively Curated: Honest Beauty Review Part 1: Everything Tinted Moisturizer Oil-free spf 20 in Creme, Luminizing Powder in Midnight Reflection, Eyeshadow Trio in Sable Brown

Excited is a major understatement for my feelings toward the launch of Honest Beauty by Jessica Alba.  Alba is a major woman crush of mine, but don't worry, I'll be documenting my unbiased opinions on the makeup products that I've ordered thus far.  Let me just say that, even with my woman crush aside, these products deliver on a level that I had never imagined with an easily accessible price point.  I love finely milled powders, I love comfortable tinted moisturizers with more coverage than just complexion evening properties, I love wearable neutral eyeshadows that stay put, and these three products have knocked it out of the park in all of these categories.  I'll be covering shade matching, performance, and pricing in this post so grab your cup of tea and let's talk(it's going to be a long one).

Honest Beauty Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer (Cream)

Consistency: This is a slightly thick tinted moisturizer.  Now, you don't usually think of a thick texture when you think of a tinted moisturizer, but I actually prefer this consistency because it allows for the product to offer higher coverage.  I purchased the shade Cream and I believe this shade is a perfect match for my skin tone.  It is a light shade with neutral/yellow undertones.  This spreads very easily although it is thicker than a conventional tinted moisturizer.  A great bonus is the addition of spf 20 in the product in the form of Zinc Oxide 13.6%. This is packaged in a white squeeze bottle with a metal brushed cap giving off a minimalistic look.

Experience: This tinted moisturizer has single-handedly replaced the use of my other foundation/ tinted moisturizer/base products.  I usually grab this because all of my mornings are rushed and I need something quick and easy that does not necessarily need a setting powder but is good enough to act without a concealer to help cover up my healing acne scars.  This is able to do all of the above on top of being a convenient(it is packaged in a minimalistic squeeze bottle), throw-in-your-purse touch up for the day.  Fun fact, this is the first thing that I eagerly swatched when I opened my Honest bundle and I've had a good feeling about this new brand since that moment.    I've been able to wear this for 10 hours on end without a setting powder or primer in the East Coast fall weather without any issues whatsoever.  There was no fading or patchiness on the skin throughout my daily wear.  I will say, however, that I've been testing this while I've been in the East Coast and I've developed a dry patch on my right cheek.  I don't believe it is due to this product but it was a great way to test how the tinted moisturizer would appear on any skin texture issues.  This was able to cover but not accentuate the dry patch very well.  Lastly, this dried to a satin finish on me and I didn't have any issues with it feeling heavy or uncomfortable on my skin.

Consistency: This powder is an extremely finely milled powder that is meant to highlight the face.  I've used this powder mainly as a setting powder to brighten up my appearance.  While this powder is finely milled, there is still a significant amount of shimmer in it so using this powder as a setting powder may not be for everyone.  This shade, Midnight Reflection, is a light pink, champagne color that works extremely well with my fair-light skin tone.  I love the clean, silver compact that gives off a classic feel with its mirrored finish.  This closes with a strong magnetic snap which allows me to throw it in my makeup bag without fear of any unhappy accidents happening!

Ingredients:
Mica, Silica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Squalane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Lauroyl Lysine, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Tocopherol, Hectorite, Sodium Dehydroacetate. May Contain +/-: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491/77492/77499)

Experience: I love applying this all over my makeup to set it on the days when I want my makeup to last longer or for those nights out when I just need my skin to glow!  I do believe that the packaging of this product is great for the price point that I was able to purchase it for. I find that this gives me a lit from within glow whenever I use it all over as a foundation setter.  However, it can look a bit too iridescent if I am too heavy handed in the application so I tend to just do one layer all over the face and stop at that.  I have actually used it as a highlighter on my cheeks and nose before as well and it gives a nice glow that is absolutely stunning when it catches the light.  It isn't a wet look like the RMS Living Luminizer nor is it a brighter look such as the W3ll People Bio Brightener Stick.  This is like a cross between the two and I would have loved applying this as my main highlighter IF I wasn't so biased towards my cream based highlighters!  This wears beautifully throughout the day and I have had no problem with the glow turning into an oily looking mess at the end of a 10 hour wear day.

Honest Beauty Eyeshadow Trio in Sable Brown

Consistency: This is an extremely fine pressed eyeshadow palette consisting of three color: soft stone, light bronze, and vanilla cream.  These shades are definitely extremely pigmented upon first swipe and they are also buildable for those who want gradual color.  I found that these did kick up a bit of powder when I swatched them and I had to tap off some excess powder from my eyeshadow brush.  This didn't pose a huge problem for me, however, as it was only a bit of powder.  I love the buttery soft texture of these eyeshadows.  None of them appeared chalky on me, even considering the vanilla cream color that ended up being an amazing brow highlight that was subtle and natural.  Do note that this particular product does contain Carmine for those who are trying to avoid this ingredient. This palette has also included a pull out card for application instructions.  The shadows are encased in a very substantial cardboard packaging that has a satin-like finish that goes along with the gray and pink theme of Honest Beauty.

Ingredients:

Mica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Zinc Stearate, Magnesium Carbonate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Sodium Dehydroacetate. May Contain +/-: Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491/77492/77499), Carmine (CI 75470), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Ultramarines (CI 77007)

Experience: I usually apply the soft stone color all over the bottom half of my upper lid and then blend the light bronze on the outer corners of my eyes while applying the vanilla cream shade to my brow bone.  I find that this application works extremely well for me and my eye shape. My everyday experience with these shadows is, again, nothing but amazing.  They stay well on my eyelids and I have never had a creasing problem with them in the past few weeks that I've worn them daily.  On lighter makeup days, I like to just sweep the soft stone color across my lip and apply many coats of mascara.  On the nights when I go out, I like to add the soft bronze to my outer corner and include the vanilla cream on my brow bone to intensify the look.  I've been reaching for this palette on the daily as I find that the soft stone color has quickly become my favorite eyeshadow color in my collection.  I'm definitely planning on taking this with me on any short trips as well since this palette is so compact and it has all of the colors I'll ever need (I'm a true neutrals girl at heart).

Shade Matching:

I took a blind guess with picking Cream as my shade in the Tinted Moisturizer and just happened to get lucky in that it matched my skin tone.  Not everyone may get as lucky, but that is why customer service exists!  Although I wish that they allowed us to sample the base products in sample packets, the next best thing is speaking to a customer representative whether through email or phone.  I've had only pleasant experiences with their customer service as I have tried contacting them both through phone and email.  I only waited on hold for the phone for less than a minute and I was able to receive an email response the same day that I sent them a shade matching question.  I don't really find the shade swatches or models very helpful from the website so I went ahead and asked the customer rep which shade they would pick for me in the cream foundation.  I described my skin tone to them as fair-light with a neutral undertone and that Cream in the Tinted Moisturizer worked very well for my skin tone.  The customer rep matched me with the shade Shell in the Cream Foundation which I will be trying in my next bundle that will ship out at the end of October(I chose the 8 week delivery option).  He(the customer rep) also offered a consultation over the phone for a perfect shade match in case the email was not enough and reassured me that, in the case that the shade did not match, I would be sent a replacement in the right shade.

Deals:

All in all, I loved the two base makeup products that I've gotten from Honest Beauty and am so excited to try more from their range (I'm a bundle subscriber).  On that note, I'd like to impart some wisdom that I received about their bundle services from Teri Miyahara(youtube)!  The very best deal that you can get from Honest Beauty is through their bundle system where you pay $50 for any 3 products from their range with a payment and delivery system of either 4, 6, or 8 weeks where you are allowed to choose the exact ship date.  Considering that it is $50( $16.67/item) per delivery, the best way to maximize your spending is by placing any item $22 and above in your bundle.  This is because you are allowed to add up to 5 items along with your bundle order for 25% off the listed price.  That means that a $22 product would be $16.50 if it was an additional item in your bundle and anything below $22 would be less than $16.50.  Technically, your bundle price wouldn't be maximized if you were to put a $16 item with a $15 and $22 item since they would all have been cheaper as an add on item.  I hope that I haven't lost any of you with these numbers (but if I have, please leave any inquiries in the comments below).

I truly, HONESTLY(excuse the pun), love these products and can't wait to review more for you guys!

You can find HONEST BEAUTY: HERE (this is my invite link and I truly hope to hear your opinions on the products if you decided to try it out)

I can't wait to talk about all things Honest Beauty in the upcoming posts in this series!

Big Love,

  1. Thank you for the review! I was wondering what MAC shade you are? The honestly cream color from this line matches perfectly with my skin color and I was looking info finding other products that would match such as foundation. This information would be super helpful!
